Background
The Police Auxiliary Service was established by the MPD in December 1995. The Auxiliary
Service is a non-uniformed civilian volunteer program that uses civilian volunteers
(auxiliaries)
in a variety of capacities. Some volunteers perform services or functions which augment an
existing function, service or program which is staffed by employees of the MPD. Others
perform
services or functions which create a community service capability that would not be
available
under existing programs or within the level of available resources. Volunteers sometimes
take
on the duties of a regular employee during the temporary absence of that employee
(provided
the volunteer is qualified to perform the assigned duties), or they can supplement
existing
employees during periods of heavy workloads or relieve backlogs.
Auxiliaries are allowed to perform only those duties for which they have appropriate
training,
knowledge, skills and abilities, and which are authorized to be performed by civilian
members of
the Department. Members of the Police Auxiliary Service shall have no police powers and
shall,
under no circumstances, conduct or represent themselves in a manner that would suggest
they
have police powers. Volunteers must commit to work a minimum two-hour tour of duty per
scheduled day and no less than 16 hours per month. Auxiliaries may work full-time,
part-time or
intermittent schedules, and either day or night shifts.
Membership Qualifications
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school education or equivalent,
live in
the Washington metropolitan area and have no criminal record, excluding minor traffic
violations. Auxiliaries must also be mentally and physically capable of performing the
duties
assigned to them without unreasonable danger of harm or injury to themselves or any other
person. No individual shall be denied an opportunity to volunteer services based on any
disability, provided the individual can adequately perform the duties safely and without
hazard
to one's self or others.
The Police Auxiliary Service is an equal opportunity program. No offer of voluntary
services by
any person shall be unlawfully rejected on the basis of race, color, religion, national
origin,
gender, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, family
responsibilities,
source of income, place of residence or business, or any other basis of unlawful
discrimination
under the laws of the District of Columbia.
